Contemplative Bookbinding
Books are objects made for both intimate and collective spaces, to both be shared and to be enjoyed in solitude. They are vessels for our hearts, our stories, our voices. They store our memories, histories, and ideas. And so, how they are made is an important creative interplay with who we are and how we share and care for our thoughts. In this Gather, we’ll craft our own handmade notebooks through the Pamphlet Stitch Bookbinding process. With simple materials like cardstock, needle, and thread, we’ll use historical techniques and the presence of our current minds and bodies to create a space for our thoughts and dreams to roam.

Kelly Odette Laughlin made her first book when she was seven. She titled it Animals of the World and crafted it from legal paper, staples, markers, glue, and collaged animals. In high school, she discovered the rich history to the art of books and learned her first bookbinding stitch. From there, she studied Printmaking and Book Arts in college. And she went on to become a teaching artist, writer, bookbinder, curious thinker, and founder of odette press.
